Lions, and Tigers, and Bears. Oh My!

OK, no lions or tigers, but Mr. Math Teacher and the kids came back from their little trip up North with tales of bear sightings. Our church did an overnight trip to a Christian camp in the Northwoods over the weekend (this is the same camp where we go for family camp and youth camps in the summer and a winter weekend in January). Mr. Math Teacher took the kids this year. The place is pretty rustic, but most of the wildlife that we usually see is small. This year, though, there were three bears - a momma and two babies (yearlings) seen near the dumpster by the dining hall. The bears seemed pretty comfortable around the camp, though, and went from the dining hall around to the canteen. They were remarkably unworried about people - and the kids were remarkably unworried about the bears. The camp staff got all the campers rounded up into one place well away from the bears while another staffer went out to shoot the bears in the backside with some rock salt to convince them to look elsewhere for food. I imagine there's a good chance that those bears will have an appointment with the DNR rather soon.

My weekend was far more quiet and I like it that way! But, I'm glad to have my family home again.
