I should have worded that better. Paul did not call for the abolition of slavery for a number of reasons, but neither did he condone slavery as it was. His command for Christians to "submit to each other" applied to Christian slaves and slave holders. He was giving radical commands to both sides of the slave equation.

That being said, our ancestors in the antebellum South did not interpret Paul's epistles that way. They chose to believe that since Paul didn't call for full abolition that slavery was an OK thing. A closer reading of the letters with attention to context shows that Paul was saying anything but that. So, yes, I can see that my paragraph on slavery might have given some misunderstanding. Sorry about that.
Catherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05977860195847730169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27337216.post-63048148641662974722016-08-11T19:07:24.021-05:002016-08-11T19:07:24.021-05:00I was not asserting that the Bible supports slaver...I was not asserting that the Bible supports slavery, but that some people interpreted it in that way. My point is that people have used the Bible to say that slavery was OK. In fact, the Southern Baptist Convention was created when they split from northern Baptists in the years before the Civil War because of the slavery issue. Today, though, you would find very few Southern Baptists who would say that the Bible supports slavery. What's the difference over the last 150 years? Interpretation. It's the same Bible, but we read it differently.Catherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05977860195847730169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27337216.post-62268377947472583132016-08-10T09:56:31.243-05:002016-08-10T09:56:31.243-05:00You may find this article interesting.

It's quite lengthy, as I do believe there is a difference between accepting Jesus as your Savior and committing to living your life for Him (at least there was a huge time span for me). I don't remember the exact "day" or even "year" really, as I don't focus on that. But rather, I'm a changed person because of Him and Him alone. I truly am not the same person I was 20 years ago (thank you Lord!). And that, is what I tell people about---how He changed me. :) Trust me, if you knew the old me, you'd want nothing to do with me. I wouldn't want anything to do with the old me! The Romans/James thing is actually a good thing, reminding us that salvation is based on our connection to Christ, but if we're not doing good things, are we really connected? No. Because the people who love Jesus obey. ... not out of some urgency or dread, but an understanding that grace transforms us and allows us to extend it to others.

For me, that was the part that didn't translate: This is grace. The world needs it. I need it! And the more I bathe in it, the more it will transform me, move me, and spill into others.

The urgency, the press from my church background, squeezed out the grace. It wasn't intentional; it was simply overlooked. And, I think, I got this idea that grace was for those who were not yet saved. I missed the connection that grace is for everyone, me especially!

I could go on an on about this. But I'll stop. Great post. Good stuff. May we all find rest in God's love and make that move us to let that love pour into others.

~LukeLuke Holzmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07799632321310461828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27337216.post-27044060831798023942014-09-13T17:30:09.462-05:002014-09-13T17:30:09.462-05:00Thanks for the prayers, Deborah! To claim that it's because He is angry with the people of Liberia is putting oneself in the same position as God. It's really best not to do that. :) Some of the positive things that I have seen from this tragedy is that Samaritan's Purse, a wonderful Christian organization and ministry, has gotten a lot of media coverage and the name of Jesus has been proclaimed. A lot of people have been praying for all of these people who have this virus. Maybe, just maybe, God has other reasons than what these clergyman think. Only God knows. Human feeble minds cannot comprehend the mind of God. He is on a completely different level than us. So it's best not to waste time trying to figure Him out because we can't. However, I've found that when I pray for Him to allow me to see things from His perspective, a lot of times I come away from something with a different viewpoint. It's awful what these people are going through. But God is a loving God who doesn't want any of His children to perish. So I firmly believe He has a purpose, even though we may not understand.KChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04066168868997990760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27337216.post-57206623704935326682014-07-25T14:18:34.116-05:002014-07-25T14:18:34.116-05:00Oh, my!
